POLICE and Fire Officers will be running a drink and driving awareness campaign at Tesco’s car park, Cullompton, on the evening of Wednesday, December 3, between 7pm to 9pm.

Local fire officer Chris Richards said: “We would particularly welcome along new drivers and young drivers in the age bracket of 17 to 25 years so that we can discuss the dangers of fast driving, or driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

"A speed driving simulator and a vehicle from the Honest Truth campaign, which gives advice to those just learning to drive or who have recently passed their test, will be on site.”

PC Graham Custance has also been involved with the planning of this event and said: “We want to remind drivers about general road safety and winter driving issues.

"At this time of year with Christmas fast approaching we want to remind all drivers about drinking and driving.

"Many drivers tend to forget that alcohol can take many hours to pass through the body’s system and they run the risk of still being over the legal alcohol limit for driving the next morning when they get up for work.

"This needs to be taken into account when planning to consume alcohol on a night out.”

Police officers will be carrying out spot checks across Mid Devon, both during the evenings and early mornings in the run up to Christmas.
