THE Parish of Broadclyst will get behind Brake Charity's National Road Safety Week from November 17-23.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police and Broadclyst Traffic Group are all supporting Brake Charity’s Road Safety Week by holding a speed watch event in Broadclyst.

Broadclyst Parish Council, which includes the Broadclyst Traffic group is continuing its campaign next week to reduce speeds in Broadclyst and provide a safer environment for its school children, residents and visitors.

Simon Roberts from Broadclyst Traffic Group explained: “Unfortunately, with the housing expansion around the Exeter countryside and the fact that many households now own more than one vehicle, road safety in the region is a grave concern.“

The new Think Campaign for driving on country roads quotes that 60% of all fatalities occur on country roads. On average, three people are killed every day driving in the countryside, while a quarter of motorists say they have had a near miss and nearly a third admit to driving too fast.

Events taking place in Broadclyst:

1. Broadclyst will be putting up Road Safety banners at the entrances to the village with the Brake Charity's message 'Look out and slow down' focusing upon driver awareness in our community.

2. On Tuesday 18 November from 10am until 12.30pm the Police and the Fire Service will be at Clyst Vale Community College talking about road safety and working with the pupils to carry out School Speed Watch.

3. On Wednesday 19 November from 10.30am until 3pm the Police and the Fire Service will be at Broadclyst Primary School talking about road safety and working with the children to carry out School Speed Watch.

4. On Thursday 20 November, the Broadclyst Community Speed Watch Team is planning to carry out an all day Speed Watch Activity.

Gareth Sydenham from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: “The road safety week speed event is a great example of partnership working with various agencies combining to address a serious problem in a specific area.

“The Broadclyst Traffic Group has developed local action plans for a safer environment for all road users and has built a partnership of dedicated residents, local representatives, schools, police and fire services in order to deliver increased safety for all.”
