OVER 1,200 young people aged 14-25 will get the chance to ‘Have a go’ at a range of skills and discover new career opportunities when ‘The Skills Show Experience’ arrives in Exeter next week.

‘Have a Go Exeter will take place at Westpoint Arena, Clyst St Mary on the 22nd October. Schools will be attending in the morning and there will be an opportunity for anyone aged 14 to 25 to come along in the afternoon between 2.30 and 5pm.

Supported by the European Social Fund and the National Careers Service, the event is designed to inspire young people by giving them hands-on experience of a variety of careers.

The event will showcase a wide variety of sectors including hospitality, engineering, marine conservation, construction, creative industries, agriculture and sport and leisure.

Devon County Council is supporting the event and providing visitors with the opportunity to find out more about the catering sector, which will include an interactive cooking demonstration from Devon-based Great British Bake Off contestant Glenn Cosby.

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Councillor for Economy and Growth at Devon County Council, said: “Have a Go Exeter’ is set to be an exciting and inspirational event, giving young people an invaluable opportunity to try out a huge range of career options.

"It really brings careers advice to life by not just talking about what young people can do for a living, but by giving them first-hand experience and the chance to find out what they’re good at and what excites them.”

The event is open to anyone but particularly welcomes young people who are not yet in education, employment or training, along with their parents or carers.

Andrew Leadbetter added: “These young people are the future of our economy and, alongside other local organisations and employers, we’re pleased to help them choose and develop their career paths, and gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.”

The event organisers, Business West on behalf of West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, expect significant numbers of young people to attend but some spaces are still available in the afternoon.
