THE owners of East Devon’s Otterton Mill are putting out a call for people interested in joining its team of volunteer millers, and learning the ancient skill of stonegrinding flour by harnessing the power of water.

“Milling has taken place at Otterton Mill for over 1000 years. For the past 10 years, volunteers from the local community have been the driving force behind our milling” explained Simon Spiller, who runs the Mill with wife Caroline.

“We’ve been extremely fortunate to have a small group of millers who bring a wealth of experience, skill and enthusiasm to what they do. Not only do they stoneground flour for which we are famous, but they also look after the ancient mill machinery and preserve it in full working order for current and future generations to enjoy,” Simon continued.

Milling occurs two or three times a month in Otterton and millers often find themselves entertaining large numbers of people.

“It’s not uncommon for several hundred people to visit on Milling Days in the summer. Most visitors are very curious and fascinated by the whole process. So it’s important that our volunteers enjoy talking to the public” said Simon.

“We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone with a background in carpentry and mechanical engineering, or anyone who can bring practical “DIY” type skills.

"But most important is an inquisitive and warm nature, combined with a sense of humour and eagerness to learn as part of a small team.”

Volunteers at Otterton Mill are always fed and watered well and have their travel expenses covered. Generally, millers volunteer two or three days per month, although the time commitment can be flexible to suit individual availability.
