THE Brixham Town Council Civic Award will be presented to Nick Brown on Tuesday July 29, by the Chairman of Brixham Town Council, Cllr Paul Addison.

The ceremony will be held at 8.30am at Brixham Town Council’s open air pool, Shoalstone, overlooking the whole of Torbay.

Numerous worthy nominees put forward for the Civic Award were considered by Brixham Town Council Community Services Committee in June.

After much debate it was agreed, by a close vote, that the award should go to Mr Nick Brown, a true unsung hero, for his years spent looking after Shoalstone Pool.

The Brixham Civic Award is presented to a person who has, in the course of the year and through their activities, furthered the welfare and/or improved the quality of life of Brixham people.

To be considered for the award a person must be nominated by a least two people, they must have made a material contribution to the advancement, well being and welfare of the people of Brixham or supported charitable work carried out in the Town or assisted the work of the Town Council in a voluntary capacity or demonstrated outstanding Citizenship, or be noteworthy for exceptional voluntary work for a local charity or has had a long term involvement with a voluntary organisation.

Cllr M Hodge Chairperson of the committee said: "It was a hard decision this year and Nick is a very worthy winner of this, the town‘s highest accolade."

Jenny Harriman, who was one of the people who nominated Nick Brown, said: "Nick is the most consistent worker, a great ambassador for the pool, he always has a smile, is a willing worker and cleans the ringing room in St Mary‘s church and looks after the bell tower as if it were a 5 star hotel."

The nomination was supported by tribute letters from many others who also described Nick as tireless, dedicated, diligent and selfless.

Chairman, Councillor Paul Addison formally announced Nick as the winner at the Town Council meeting held on July 24 in Brixham Town Hall, prior to the presentation and described Nick as ‘a real unsung hero, without whom the pool would not be kept as well as it is, which benefits the whole community especially in the glorious weather we are experiencing at the start of the school holiday.’
