Crediton Link Road "progressing well"

DEVON County Council says work on the Crediton link road is progressing well and is on schedule despite the exceptionally wet winter weather.

A key phase in the project was reached last month when the beams for the bridge, which carries Downeshead Lane over the new road, were lifted into place.

Work is progressing around the Commonmarsh Lane junction with excavations and utility diversions, and north of the Wellparks roundabout with drainage works.

The next phase of construction will focus on the area between the bridge and the Commonmarsh Lane junction with topsoiling, and the installation of the road foundations and filter drains.

Cllr Andrew Leadbetter, county council cabinet member for economy and growth, said: “I’m pleased to hear the scheme’s progressing well.

“This is excellent news considering the atrocious weather we’ve experienced this winter.

“The current dry spell will help the work continue apace and I’m sure everyone will be delighted if the project stays on track.”

Cllr Nick Way, county councillor for Crediton Rural, said: “All the work seems to be going at a good pace.

“The workforce is currently focusing on the Common-marsh Lane/Marsh Lane junction and installing the drainage pipes in the lower section near the Wellparks roundabout.”

Contractor South-West Highways started the county council scheme last July – it is expected to be finished by the autumn.

When completed, the new road will provide a direct connection from the A377 south of the town to Lords Meadow Industrial Estate.

The 760m single carriageway forms a key part of Mid Devon District Council’s Air Quality Action Plan to imp-rove air quality along Exeter Road, Charlotte Street, East Street and Mill Street.

It is also designed to reduce congestion and support economic development.
