THERE'S likely to be little respite from the extreme weather for Mid Devon, with further storms forecast for the weekend.

Flood alerts were issued for many parts of Mid Devon on Wednesday, with further warnings in place for the River Culm from Broadclyst to Clyst St Mary.

Heavy rain on Wednesday resulted in alerts being issued on the River Exe between Exebridge and Tiverton, and Rivers Haddeo, Batherm and Lowman.

High winds felled a tree on the Tiverton to Exeter Road in the afternoon And there's plenty more to come, with further heavy rain expected to begin again on Friday afternoon and continue well into Saturday.

Tiverton Town Council, in conjunction with the Environment Agency has set up a local Flood Plan Group, made up of councillors representing the town's wards.

On Tuesday (February 11) residents of Tiverton were urged to prepare for flooding and to be aware of the dangers of flood water.

A statement from Tiverton Town Council said: “People should remain flood aware with the on-going bad weather and are encouraged to check the Environment Agency website for the latest flood information.

“Drivers are urged to 'think not sink' in times of heavy rain. Motorists who drive into flood water are taking unnecessary risks with their own safety.

“A misjudged situation can lead to a vehicle breaking down in flood water, leaving the motorists in need of urgent assistance.

Jane Fletcher-Peters from the Environment Agency said: “Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or fords. The water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast.

“Your vehicle may be swept away or become stranded. Vehicles can float in just two feet of water.

“If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately if safe to do so and seek higher ground.

“Do not travel in heavy rain storms unless absolutely necessary. Keep an eye on weather reports on local television or listen to local radio.”
