Firefighters were called out to two multi-car crashes in Devon on Sunday after hail fell on the A38.

Three fire appliances from Ivybridge, Plympton and Crownhill attended crashes at the Lee Mill junction and a second just before the Smithaleigh turning. In total nine vehicles were involved including a motorcycle.

Highways warned fire crews en route that the A38 carriageway was slippery due to freezing rain and hail.

Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed one road traffic collision just past the Lee Mill junction and a second road traffic collision just before the Smithaleigh turning. In total nine vehicles were involved including a motorcycle.

At Lee Mill junction, six cars and one motorcycle were involved. All persons were free and clear of the vehicles. Fire crews assisted Ambulance with first aid and made the vehicles safe using small tools. The police also attended this incident.

The crash at Smithaleigh junction involved two vehicles. All persons were free and clear of the vehicles. One adult female with two children were suffering from shock.

Ambulance crews tended to all three casualties on scene. Fire crews awaited the arrival of Police before removing the vehicles from the highway. The Highways Agency attended this incident to clear debris from the highways and arrange vehicle removal.

The Police closed the westbound carriageway so that emergency services could deal with this incident.
