A flood warning is in place for Staverton and riverside locations and roads between Buckfastleigh and Totnes.

Up to 40 milimetres of rain has fallen over the past 12 hours over Dartmoor and the Environment Agency warns that rivers are rising in response.

Further rain is expected until 10:30 this morning although rivers will continue to rise for a while after this time.

Further rain and high winds are expected in the South West.

Although most rivers have receded from the peaks seen over Christmas, they are full and the ground is saturated, which means there is an increased risk of surface and river water flooding.

From Monday onwards large waves and strong winds are expected along the south and west coasts which may lead to spray and waves over-topping promenades and coastal defences, especially on Thursday as spring tides approach.

There are currently nine flood alerts and there is a possibility that some flood warnings will be issued overnight, and we would urge people to take steps to protect themselves and their properties.

Throughout the festive period, Environment Agency teams have been out checking flood defences, removing debris from rivers, monitoring river levels from the incident rooms and issuing alerts and warnings, and supporting local authorities.

Drivers are also urged to check the latest flood updates ahead of their latest journeys – and not to drive through floodwater.
