TIVERTON'S skate park is all set for a major makeover after Mid Devon District Council approved plans for £200,000 upgrade on Wednesday (December 4).
The skate park on Bolham Road, Tiverton has been the subject of a two-year campaign to improve the facility and a committee have worked to raise the necessary funds for the improvements.
Steve Densham, Development Services Manager at Mid Devon District Council believes the new skate park will be a 'fantastic facility' for the town. He said: “The existing skate park of timber construction has reached the end of its life and is beyond economic maintenance.
“The new skate park will be constructed of concrete and will provide the local skate community a fantastic facility that will also draw users to the Tiverton from throughout the region.
“The local skate community have been fully involved with the Council over a number of years in developing the facility which will provide opportunity for young and novice users and a challenge for the more experienced.
“In terms of proposed plans and the stage we're at I can advise that - with the granting of a planning consent the Council will now be able to firm up the construction phase of the project which is due to commence immediately in the new year. It is anticipated the new skate park will be completed for by Easter.
Users of the current skate park were consulted in a bid to come up with the final designs (pictured).
The park will be built by Dorset company Maverick Skateparks, a specialist design and build company based in Poole.
Maverick representatives are due to meet with the Council next week and work on the work is scheduled to get under way early in the New Year.
