Family of three rescued from North Devon sand dunes
5:28pm Monday 30th September 2013 in Devon
A MOTHER and her two children had to be airlifted to safety after getting lost on sand dunes in north Devon last night (September 29).
The mother had been walking on Braunton Burrows with her children aged 10 and 3 from 6pm before becoming disorientated in the pitch dark.
A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said they recieved an emergency call from a "distraught" and "panicking" mother who said her children "were getting cold and upset."
He added: "Local police units had been talking to her on her mobile but could not ascertain her location at all as she could not see any lights or landmarks.
"The police helicopter had just completed another task at Launceston and flew to the location which is on the coast near Barnstaple. On approach, the crew from the helicopter called her.
"By use of thermal image camera and night vision goggles, the helicopter crew quickly located the family who were in the middle of the vast area and managed to land close to their location which was inaccessible to any road or tracks.
The family who had strayed a mile away across the dunes were safely guided onto the helicopter and flown back to their car.
