Double amputee Richard runs through Mid Devon, completing 40 marathons in 40 days
11:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in Devon
PARALYMPIC gold medallist Richard Whitehead ran through Mid Devon as part of a charity challenge which saw him complete 40 marathons in just 40 days.
The 37-year-old double amputee ran on advanced blades and was joined by wellwishers through Uffculme, Tiverton and Crediton last week.
He set out from John O’Groats to Land’s End in mid-August and completed the challenge on Monday evening, raising money for Sarcoma UK and Scope.
“My biggest challenge besides the huge blisters and sore hips is the ‘Groundhog Day’ repetition of running for 40 days, and keeping myself motivated and in good spirits,” said Richard.
“Seeing the support on Twitter has helped me get over the daily agony of the run.
“What’s more, it has helped trigger even more donations, which is what it’s all about.
“News of every donation made each step towards the finish that much easier.”
