Mid Devon students get active over recycling

AROUND 80 youngsters from secondary schools across Devon attended the annual Waste Summit meeting at County Hall this week.

The summits were set up in 2004 and this year, students from nine schools and colleges took part in group activities which tested and challenged their existing knowledge of how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Last year in Devon, over 196,000 tonnes of material was recycled rather than being sent to landfill with the county contributing one of the highest recycling rates in the county - at 55.2 percent.

Cllr Roger Croad, said: "People deserve a great deal of credit for helping Devon to achieve one of the highest recycling rates in the country.

“There's always more that could be done and the summit aims to get pupils to think about waste issues such as reducing packaging on modern consumer goods.”
