A 43-YEAR-OLD man has arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after two Devon County Council contractors were airlifted to hospital following a serious collision on the A361 at Tiverton this morning, Tuesday, January 29.
Emergency services were called to the scene involving a van and three men in their 40s working on the northbound carriageway close to Gornhay Cross at 11am.
Two of the contractors - working for South West Highways on behalf of the council - were airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The third injured man was described as 'walking wounded' and did not require hospital treatment.
The arrested man, who was driving the van, was apprehended at the scene and taken into police custody in Exeter.
A Devon County Council spokesman said: "We have been notified of an incident on the A361 involving two members of staff from Devon County Council's highway maintenance contractor SWH who were working on a closed lane of the highway. We are awaiting further details but our thoughts are with the staff and their families at this time."
