SUMMARY
• The Mail on Sunday has published a defamatory and erroneous article which is a serious distortion of the facts which we emphatically and categorically deny as being both false and prejudicial.

• At the time of writing (Tuesday 22nd January 2013 0900 hours) Wilton Park School has received no notification or advice of any impending investigation by the Wiltshire County Council, the Department of Education, the Police or any other agency

• The headline ‘Christian sect school that ‘shut up’ girl pupil’ portrays the biased and inaccurate character of the entire article: it is completely untrue to suggest that this government registered and accredited school in any way acted upon directions or instructions from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.



SPECIFIC REBUTTALS OF SOME OF THE ERRONEOUS STATEMENTS

“Christian sect school” The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is a mainstream Christian Church holding substantially the same doctrines as the Church of England. The PBCC is not a sect but is structured and operates on common Christian ground as taught by Holy Scripture which is available for all Christians.

“Yesterday a local education authority confirmed it was investigating allegations of child cruelty and failures to teach the National Curriculum at…Wilton Park School”
Wilton Park School has not received any notice or advice of any investigation whatsoever. Teaching at Wilton Park School is based on the National Curriculum and is completely open to unfettered inspection by relevant Government Authorities at all times.

“The only girl was shut up for the longest number of days…”
• The ‘only’ girl was never ‘shut up’ and the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church congregation in her parish have never taken any action restricting her activities.
• The girl’s father was going through a difficult time and the girl’s agreed wish was to stay at home with her mother in support of the household.
• This was done with the full knowledge of the school, and the school provided educational resources and support so that she could do her schoolwork at home temporarily
• It is unconceivable that a national newspaper should denigrate a school that was showing support and care for a family that was going through a difficult time


“… boys and girls, aged 16 to 18, are subjected to gender segregation at all times” This allegation appears next to a picture (two boys and a girl talking to each other) and is both completely false and damningly unbelievable. Boys and girls are taught together in the same classrooms and participate together in extracurricular projects and excursions. Nor are they restricted in any way as regards appropriate social contact. This preposterous allegation is clearly intended to ridicule our very treasured young people who enjoy and cherish very active lives as youthful members of our community.

“Laptops are considered instruments of evil” this is completely untrue. Laptops are found in nearly all Plymouth Brethren homes and businesses and are used in all Plymouth Brethren Schools. Computers and mobile phones used by Brethren members have restrictions to prevent access to the unrestricted, immoral and contemptible filth and corruption that we regard as evil and which is so readily available on these electronic devices.
“Liaisons and relationships between pupils are prohibited and monitored using CCTV” use of CCTV show our commitment to Child Protection and school security. According to an independent study last year, more than 2000 secondary schools and academies used 47,806 cctv cameras in total, including 26,887 inside school buildings. Wilton Park School is hardly unusual in this.

“Pupils seldom play any competitive sport” this is another falsehood. Pupils play football, hockey, cricket, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, tennis and other competitive games. They enjoy competitions between houses within a school and also compete in carnivals between schools.

“The Exclusive Brethren … formed in 1848. In that year they broke off from the much larger Plymouth Brethren… founded in 1832” The Mail on Sunday cannot even get basic historical facts right, which can be found in any encyclopaedia. The Brethren originated in Dublin in 1827, after J.N.Darby with others separated from the Established Church. In 1848 there was a division and some members set up other churches also known as “Brethren”. The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and the other “Brethren” continue to hold JND’s teachings. The “Exclusive Brethren” name was ascribed to the PBCC by the press in the late 1950s.

As to holding the same doctrines as CofE, what utter tripe. I was bought up in the Exclusive Brethren cult and I am now an Intern and Theological Student with CofE. My Exclusive Brethren family are allowed nothing to do with me, my CofE Church family are always supporting and helping me. I am not allowed to worship or go to church with my Exclusive Brethren family, yet my Exclusive Brethren family would be welcome in my CofE church if they were allowed to come, but they are prevented from doing so even if they wished it. I can take communion at me CofE church with any current commuincant member of any other Christian Church, but I am not allowed to even eat or drink with an Exclusive Brethren cult member, let alone have the "Lords's Supper" with them, as i am considered evil for leaving their cult and becoming a committed Born-again Christian after doing so.

(they must not realize that to question in the Exclusive Brethren means being punished for not automatically following the directives of the leader without first seeking if it is of God, as the Bible tells us to do... or to be expelled for refusing to do as you are told, in direct contradiction with Human Rights article 9.)

It may also be pertinent to point out at this time that the Exclusive Brethren (newly named Plymouth Brethren Christian Church) are listed on many cult watch and cult warning sites, and as dangerous.

It was in 1820 that the ‘Plymouth Brethren’ movement started when a group of Christians met in Plymouth, Devon, in England, for worship and the breaking of bread without the support or use of ordained ministers.

A man who dominated the movement in the early years was J. N. Darby (1800-1882) but in 1848 there was a deep division between Darby and the Plymouth brethren. The differences between the two groups were not insignificant. Darby insisted on separating from people who disagreed with his interpretations of Scripture, and a significant number of believers endorsed Darby’s policy and followed him. Those who followed Darby were known as ‘Exclusives’. They believed in a universal worldwide network of fellowships, with strong central leadership and a tight control of members.

In contrast, the Plymouth Brethren were called ‘Open Brethren’. For them, each local assembly is independent. The fellowship enjoyed between assemblies is spontaneous and spiritual, without impinging on the autonomy of the local assembly. The believers locally are themselves directly responsible to the Lord, not a human leader. This represents a major difference between the two sections of the Brethren movement.

Also, I cannot find the above information that Zoe James goes on about over this groups recent deceptive new name change, except in Wikipedia which is in dispute as it is inaccurate; all other encyclopedias, especially respected Theological ones clearly state the separation of Exclusive Brethren from the Plymouth Brethren by Darby in the 1840's or 1848 to be precise...

Ummm and one more thing, you have got the guys in the photo the wrong way around, the one on the right is the Exclusive Brethren (or if you insist, the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church member - even though the real Plymouth Brethren have already complained about this seemingly deliberate identity deception).

We have seen the statement from the Wilton Park Trustees ‘COMMENTS ON ARTICLE IN THE MAIL ON SUNDAY 20TH JANUARY 2013’ and as informed of the witnessed facts we unequivocally support everything contained therein.
The Mail article is a disgraceful misrepresentation of the true situation and is full of error and distortion.
As regards the alleged ‘shutting up’ of the girl pupil:
• The girl pupil was never ‘shut up’ at any time by her local elders or the congregation.
• When the family was going through a difficult time, church elders provided support and counsel as a result of which the household has been kept together as a family unit.
• The girl temporarily stayed at home in support of and with the full sympathy of her mother, and with the full knowledge of the school. Wilton Park School facilitated this by providing learning materials and support and in fact successfully sat her exams during this time.

Teaching at Wilton Park School, as in all PBCC schools, is based on the National Curriculum and is carried out under the direction and guidance of non-Brethren professional teachers.
The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church believes strongly in the sanctity of marriage and the family and this is reflected in the Christian ethos of the school.

Garth Christie (one of the statement providers above) is the one who stood up in the Charity Commission enquiry and deliberately deceived the members of that group under oath.

Im sorry but I cannot believe that he would suddenly start giving factual statements now. He also had to then apologize to the MP's select committe for misleading them too, which was widely reported in another news article, shall I get the link for you?

AND he said that the Brethren "welcomed public scrutiny" however every time someone opens up the Exclusive Brethren to public scrutiny, they get sued or threatened of being sued... this is a direct violation of the Biblical teaching of do not take your matters to the law courts, and consider it a blessing when you are cursed and people even tell lies about you... I see none of this Christian behaviour in the ongoing actions of the Exclusive Brethren (now calling themselves Plymouth Brethren Christian Church).

Open Brethren churches do not normally maintain formal membership, requiring application and admission. 5. Scrutiny

5.2 During the questioning by the Commons PAC, Mr Garth Christie, one of the UK Brethren leaders, made this statement:

"We do not mind any of the questions. We welcome scrutiny, that is not a problem to us. If any of the members have further questions they would like to send in or approach us about, we welcome it. We have nothing to hide. "

5.3 When considering this statement it should be understood that the Exclusive Brethren have had closed down 3 websites where ex-members have exchanged news and information, asked questions or expressed views and criticism. The current website which ex-members use has had restrictions placed on it by the Brethren. They often appear to be portrayed as David in a David and Goliath confrontation but this does not really tell the story. Due to massive wealth they have been able to pursue legal cases as far as they wish and well beyond the resources of their opposite number. Currently, a number of former members are in receipt of lawyer’s letters in an attempt to silence them and a piece of academic work has also been challenged. This can also be seen in the huge international building programme which has taken place over recent years amounting to many millions of pounds. Churches with much larger attendance would not be able to even begin such a programme.

We still haven't seen any admission by Garth Christie about his deceptions before the PASC committee, which sure seem to have been deliberate (as they were about things he could not POSSIBLY have been mistaken about), and which have now been proved by other evidence submitted to be false... but he did at least apologize for misleading the committee another time as below, although he blamed it on not making proper notes...

This does all demonstrate that Mr Christie of the Exclusive Brethren (now Plymouth Brethren Christian Church) is rather the habit of making statements in error, which is why I am not at all inclined to believe any statement with his name on it, as he may have been "confused" at the time he wrote it and be forced to apologize later for misleading us all...

It is also claimed by Zoe James in her response above, that:

I totally disagree with this statement, and many of those concerned about cult behaviour and mind control would also have the same worries, especially about statements such at these (taken directly from the Wilton Park School latest report document 2011) :

"Although teaching encourages pupil participation, teaching strategies do not do enough to promote extended oral
responses which challenge pupils to think on their feet and develop as independent
thinkers.... Pupils, and in particular the girls, are reticent about speaking at any
length during lessons..... As with Key Stage 3,
there is not always enough emphasis on the development of extended talk in lessons....Next Steps:
While not required by the regulations, the school might wish to consider the following
points for development:
• develop pupils’ confidence in expressing ideas and opinions orally to enhance
their skills as independent thinkers.....Althoug
h pupils are often articulate when speaking one-
to-one with adults, they are too often reticent, especially the girls, to answer
questions at length and are not confident speakers. Teachers do not always
challenge pupils to give the extended answers that might be expected at Post-16
level....."

As all the comments relate to reticence to talk and lack of ability to reason and think for themselves, this is clearly VERY worrying to anyone wanting to be assured that Article 9 of Human Rights was being exercised in its fullness. I am not the only person who has seen this report who has expressed extreme uneasiness as to these related comments which could easily lead to the students feeling like they are not allowed to think or speak for themselves, and therefore be susceptible to being told how to act and what to think by others, such as Church authorities.

The specific reference to girls being more reticent than boys is also of concern as it mirrors the Exclusive Brethren (or now called Plymouth Brethren Christian Church) belief that women should be subservient to men, a view that was not upheld by Jesus himself nor one which is adhered to in most mainstream Christian Churches, so this too is worrying. So I'm sorry I cannot agree with Zoe James that there is nothing of concern in the school report, there is a lot to be concerned about, especially as it is all linked to known cult behaviours to keep adherents under control.

This is possibly the biggest farce of 2013. The Plymouth Brethren, or Exclusive Brethren whatever they are calling themselves currently, are a simple bunch, true. However the reins are held by one man with his interpretation of the bible. This among other things has changed their status dramatically from a religious sect to a cult. My parents and brother live in Mid devon and we all used to live in Cullompton, I know the damaged bridge well. If Bruce Hales - cult leader says that his entire following were to commit suicide "heavens gate" style, they undoubtedly would. People do not be fooled, this 'unselfish' gift has been ordered from the top in view of the Plymouth Brethren Cult gaining 'Charitable' Status something which as a former member I can say they are most definitely not. Stan Wallis, pictured right has a four storey house, numerous vehicles is director of a successful company called Southfield Windows. One paltry 1000 quid does not make you as charitable organization. It means you buy what you want. 90% of Plymouth Brethren businesses have funds to repair the entire bridge from petty cash due to the business dealings of their cult leader Bruce. Wow Suzie, you are a busy girl writing all these blogs! All I was pointing out to Mr Wallis was that you need to be very careful before you say as he does that the Mail on Sunday revealed some interesting 'facts'. It is well known that Sunday papers stoop to the lowest levels to fabricate or twist a story primarily to sell copies. Please also note that all the comments you attribute to me are part of the school's response and not my own comments.
I am not in the least bit interested in your religious hocus-pocus and don't see why our local newspaper site needs to be rammed full of religious ravings. Any donation towards putting our flood damaged area back on it's feet is welcome and, whatever you say, very generous.

Thank you Zoe James for explaining that you were only posting a press release and not championing the cause of a cult that breaches Human Rights Article 9 and abuses children, I am glad to hear it and I apologize for being misled by your post, which seemed to be in support of the Exclusive Brethren (now calling themselves Plymouth Brethren Christian Church) practices.

However, your post did suggest that this press release by the EB/PBCC, contained the "facts" opposed to the Mail article, when it is actually more one sided than the Mail article (since it is from only one source... the cult itself).

You also appealed to fail to see that the article only said it was alleged, and it was claimed, and people had said stuff which was quoted. None of this article was even called "facts", yet a lot of the information in it was gained from reputable sources.

As for religious hocus pocus, I would actually be very concerned as the local resident you suggest you are, who my council or anyone else in a trusted community position was "getting into bed with" so to speak, as they would find out that this extremist religious group is not who they pretend to be... and they could then be linked to some very dodgy activity themselves, if they are not careful which could be much more concerning than any trouble the Mail could be possibly suggested as being in... so thanks again for your explanation and I hope this will pique your interest in being careful where your public money comes from!
