A PEDESTRIAN crossing could be placed along a busy stretch of road in Wellington.

Town councillor Andy Govier has applied to the county council’s capital budget for a share of a £2.4m road safety cash pot to fund a crossing between the church and St John’s School on Taunton Road.

Councillors were encouraged to submit Small Improvement Schemes focused on improving local highways and road safety.

Cllr Govier said: “You get a lot of children crossing between the church and the school, and some of the elderly people in the flats contacted the council asking for something to be done. I think some of them put together a petition, too.

“Sometimes they have crossing patrols outside the school and when that’s there it’s great, when it’s not there needs to be something else.

“I’m waiting to hear back and from what I gather there shouldn’t be too many problems, so hopefully we’ll have something in the New Year.”

The council’s highway engineers will now assess each scheme against design and budgetary restrictions.
