Police officers from Newton Abbot are seeking volunteers to help set up a community speed watch scheme in the area.

The initiative follows feedback from public meetings in which speeding was raised as a key concern.

As part of the scheme, volunteers monitor traffic in hot-spot areas; speeding vehicles are recorded and warning letters issued to vehicle owners. Volunteers aim to educate motorists on the pitfalls of speeding, including rising numbers of those killed or seriously injured on the areas’ roads.

Anyone caught speeding will be given sound advice. Repeat offenders will automatically be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

“Community speedwatch is a great example where local people identify a concern and then work with their local police team to ensure a positive outcome," said PCSO Rob Wright, who manages the scheme in the area.

Volunteers are provided with necessary training and equipment.
