St Keverne Band will need to buy a bigger trophy cabinet after bringing back a raft of prizes to the village from the Cornwall Brass Band Association Championships.

he senior, youth and junior sections all had a successful day, as did a number of individual players. The seniors came first in the section, were section champions and second play overall, while the junior band came second in their class.

Meanwhile the youth band became Cornish youth champions for the third year in a row.

Individual members singled out for their talent included Kelvin Retallack, who won the best cornet player and the best instrumentalist titles, and Paul Villers who was named best euphonium player of the day.

Conductor and musical director of St Keverne Band, Gareth Churcher, said he was thrilled with the performances, the results and the good conduct of all members of the three bands.

Plans are now afoot for the band to compete at another national competition, after this year’s success for the youth band at Manchester in the National Youth Brass Band Association finals.
