Drummers to fill Lemon Quay for 'Night of a Hundred Drums'

On Wednesday, October 17, organisers are hoping to fill Lemon Quay in the centre of Truro with as many drummers as they can.

The Night of a Hundred Drums is just in one of a number of community-led events aimed at celebrating the vibrant musical culture within the city.

Sean Hooper, musical director for the hugely popular City of Lights Festival, is behind the evening. “Since the unveiling of The Drummer when we had a parade of drummers heralding his arrival people have asked when we will perform a similar event.

“Music Truro this year is all about getting members of the community involved and we thought that a drumming ensemble would be a perfect way to celebrate the varied cultures in the city.

“Local samba bands and the like will perform individual pieces, with everyone coming together for the final ensemble.

Neil Scott, BID Manager for Totally Truro, who are behind the Music Truro festival, said “Anyone that was on the Piazza when The Drummer was unveiled will remember the power of the drumming.

“There is definitely something instinctive and tribal about a beating drum, and in today’s modern society it’s good to know that we haven’t lost that connection with rhythm.”

The event will take place on Wednesday, October 17 from 5:30pm on Lemon Quay, in the presence of the iconic Drummer himself. Anyone that would like to get involved can contact Sean via email at sean.hooper@btconnect.com.
