New councillor vows to be an 'independent' Conservative

St Keverne and Meneage’s new Cornwall councillor has vowed to be an “independent Conservative” after questions over his allegiances.

Councillor Walter Sanger, who took over the position made vacant by the death of long-serving councillor Pam Lyne, made the pledge at the last meeting of St Keverne Parish Council.

Despite being voted in as the Conservative party candidate, Mr Sanger told the parish councillors: “There’s very little Conservative on my paper.”

It was after councillor Sanger was asked whether he would support the parish’s previous unanimous vote in favour of introducing a “more democratic” committee system in place of the existing cabinet system at Cornwall Council.

Councillor Anthony Richards suggested: “It’s more difficult when you’re tied to a political party.”
