Fire breaks out in Royal Cornwall Hospital

A fire broke out in the Tower Block of Truro’s Royal Cornwall Hospital early yesterday morning.

A crew was called to the Treliske hospital just before 8.10am and within 15 minutes had called for back-up.

It was after they found a small fire in an electrical room on the ground floor of the five-storey block.

An evacuation plan of the building was drawn up, but in the event no evacuation had to take place.

Firefighters initially used a heat seeking camera to find the fire, which was then put out by firefighters wearing breathing equipment and using carbon dioxide extinguishers.

An on-site electrician isolated the electrics to the Tower Block and fire crews investigated floors one to five, investigating whether there were any other fire spots.

This established that the fire was confined to the ground floor of the block.

Crews used a sengar saw to get access to the electrical unit involved, to make sure the fire was completely out.

The incident then officially handed over the matter to a responsible person at the hospital.
