Third time lucky for Lizard area school sports day
4:50pm Thursday 20th September 2012 in Cornwall
It was third time lucky for Garras, St Martin and Manaccan primary schools when they were finally able to hold their joint sports day two months later than planned.
Perhaps also inspired by the summer’s Olympics Games, the weather decided to let the Triangular Sports Day go ahead this time after rain at the end of last term forced it to be postponed until after the holidays.
This year the event was hosted by Garras, taking place at Mawgan Recreation Ground. The entire event had an Olympic theme, with the children competing in their own versions of the races Team GB athletes fared so well in a few weeks ago.
These included ‘equestrian’ races with wooden horses, ‘cycling’ on scooters, sprinting and relay races with handmade Olympic torches. The three schools competed against each other, with individuals earning either a first, second or third sticker after each race.
Every child not taking part in a specific race had a flag to wave while they cheered on the competitors. At the end of the event children were each presented with a medal.
The grand finale saw the mums and dads taking to the field, for what proved to be the most competitive races of the day.
Thanks have gone to Karen Richards, assistant head at Garras Primary School, for organising such a successful event, together with her many helpers including Mrs McCabe, Mrs Shipman, Mr Merriman, Mr and Mrs Jago and the parents who helped before, during and after the event finished.
