Shoulders to the plough for Helston YFC fundraiser
7:00am Tuesday 18th September 2012 in Cornwall
It was shoulders to the plough on Saturday when Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers' Club held one of their annual fundraising events.
The ploughing match, which included a domestic tent, this year took place at Lamarth Farm, Gunwalloe by kind permission of Rodney Wallis.
The weather was kind for the day, which allowed all of the events to go ahead. There were almost 50 plots of ploughing and the domestic tent had many entries in everything from cookery to flower arranging and arts and crafts, as well as a farm produce section.
In the afternoon the very popular tractor pull was held, followed by the prize giving. Prizes were presented by Vince Curnow from the West Cornwall branch of Parkinson's UK.
This is one of two charities the club has chosen to support this year, alongside Cornwall Air Ambulance, and the proceeds from the ploughing match and other fundraising events through the year will be split between them. An auction and clay pigeon shooting match was then held while everyone enjoy a hog roast and barbecue.
The day was rounded off with sheaf pitching and a disco. Ploughing match chairman Ed Savage thanked Rodney and Luke Wallis for the use of their land and their work clearing the fields during the week. He also thanked Martin Williams for having his land on standby.
Also thanked for their help were John Lawrence, the club committee, advisory committee and members, as were the judges and competitors. Ed thanked the sponsors for their support and Matt Hosken for his work contacting them, before finally thanking his secretary, Christina Jenkin, for all of her work.
