Green-fingered talents and craft skills at Helston Harvest Fair show

The bounty of Helston’s soil and the skills of its residents, were on show at the annual horticultural and craft show at the Old Cattle Market on Saturday.

With bright sunshine greeting visitors, a large crowd gathered to see the stunning array of vegetables, flowers, fruit on show, and to watch Helston’s mayor Jonathan Radford-Gaby hand out the prizes to the worthy winners.

The event saw a close to 100 more entries on last year, with a huge array of cooking and crafts submitted by residents of Helston and the surrounding area.

Chairman of the Harvest Fair committee, John Boase, said: “Everyone was very pleased at how well it went, particularly as it was the first year that the new committee has taken over. Entries were up with almost 100 more than last year.

“A lot of people came through the doors, with takings on the door up on last year. It was almost a shame it was not held outside, the weather was so good. It has to have been one of the best days of the last year.”

Mr Boase said that the quality of many entries was very high, highlighting a crocheted crown that won a prize and a turned pot that won best in show, adding that due to the success, the committee are considering giving a small grant from the funds raised to a community group to be chosen later.

This year was the first year the fair has been run as a community event, and organisers are on the lookout for people to help ensure it remains a success.
