Vote for Helston's new 'brand'
3:00pm Sunday 9th September 2012 in Cornwall
Helston residents and traders are just weeks away from being able to vote on their favourite design to promote the town to the wider world.
A ‘branding’ project has been taking place in the town for the last few months, with people first asked to put forward three words that best describe the town. Focus groups were then held to discuss the ideas in more detail and from this Ki Design, based at Tresprison Business Park, has put together six branding ideas that feature many of the submitted words and look in detail at everything from logos to colours, fonts and images.
Later this month these ideas will be put on display in the town for the public to view and vote on, with the favourite one being adopted to promote Helston across the rest of the county and nationally.
Town centre manager Jonathan Birkett said: “It’s quite an exciting point. We want to encourage people to come in and vote for their favourite brand in the shops. The one that receives the most votes will be selected. We’ll keep that under wraps until we launch in time for Christmas.”
Full explanations about the different designs will be available at helstonbip.co.uk, which is about to go fully live.

"what makes the difference between a busy, bustling tourist destination and a ghost town? successful branding".
I think the answer should be 'Free parking'

Yes, Camborne BID (Business Impovement District) are doing 2 hrs free parking for a short period of time to gauge whether it will work, and this is in one car park (behind Argos) and you can only do this once in any one day and you still have to go and get a ticket. As this is a BID initiative, it isn't technically free; it's free for the punters, but the traders of the town will be paying it out of their rates.
Rome wasn't built in a day, but I love all the hanging baskets!

I additionally think refurbishing the toilets should be on the list of improvements.
St Just is only a small town but it is always busy and so is their car park and that has always been free.
Why did they introduce the name 'Lakeside' on a huge notice for Coronation lake, it sounds like the huge indoor shopping centre in Essex, why did they not keep it as Coronation Lake and Coronation Park.
I like the hanging baskets in Helston, but this Logo/branding business I personally think is a waste of time and money.
I think they should close Meneage Street once a week and have a boot fair, no outlay cost for market stalls or storage.

How do you promote Helston to the wider world ? Isn't that why over £40,000 a year is being paid to a Town Centre Manager and an Assistant ?

/logo to the wider world, however, I would have thought people out there know by now what Helston has to offer and If you don't offer anything different such as free parking or pedestrianised area etc how will the advertising help.

I therefore personally conclude that the town manager is more interested in being seen visibly to provide aesthetically pleasing advertisments/logos etc to encourage people into Helston, without really caring how they get there or how much they have to pay to park if coming by car. I will probably take a lot of flak for this comment as well, but personally I felt that the second Portas Pilot video came across as amateurish. Anyway only time will tell, if I am to be proved wrong, but in the meantime I do hope all the windfall money for Helston does not dwindle away before any of the bigger projects that have been mentioned are actually put into effect.

The TCM is paid for goodness sake as part of his job to respond to e-mails, additionally, I would like to know exactly what his assistants job entails. After I deciphered what the content of the e-mail was meant to say, I read with amusement at the end, 'Best'. I am still left thinking 'Best' what?

Why will no one start to deal with the problems with Helston town center. If people commenting here are able to identify the problems why can not the tcm and the town council.
I believe we will have to wait until town councils elections in may when hopefully people with Ideas and ambition for the town will put themselves forward.
The town needs reorganization not managing, more free parking and increased incentives to use the excellent relief road.
What it certainly does not need is re branding. I hope local people give this nonsense the wide berth it deserves.

Re-branding in 3 easy steps
1.Free parking.
2.An adequate bus service (not First)
3.Part pedestrianization, that makes it more safe and easy to come into Town to shop at ones leisure

meerkats, perhaps a notice printed on the wrappers, "please dispose of this wrapper responsibly and help keep Helston tidy" would be a start, also an extra rubbish bin maybe. I do challenge people if I see them drop litter or feed the gulls but then perhaps that is why I get assaulted so often lol, so I don't reccommend it to anyone else.

In any other Trade or Industry, such an arrangement would be known as bribery, corruption or the like.
In terms of the billions, yes billions,of profits these super grocers make, the sum of money awarded to Towns like Helston is an utter insult, and it should not have been accepted.
The effect is that Towns such as Helston need to employ specialists in Marketing,Advertisin
g etc the like of which the Supermarkets have been employing for years
Another competition should be launched for a logo to encourage people not to do all their shopping in these gross Supermarkets

I have to say that all these comments, including my own, are going to be made from a position of ignorance.
Non of us know all the facts. We speculate what the problems are with Helston and everyone has different priorities and idea on how a problem should be address.
I did my bachelors degree in Social Science - so I could have hours of philosophical discussion as to why Helston's perceived problems aren't already addressed and sorted.
I emphasis with all the concerned areas mentioned above; parking, rubbish, tcm job description and targets, the toilets, lack of people in the town centre. But ask your self this questions - how many of these concerned are going to be fixed?
My answer is none at the moment!
We have far too many external factors. Cornwall Council should stop dictating from their ivory towers and had power AND MONEY back to the Town & Parish councils (Localism Bill is in place, but it's taking time). Parking, rubbish collection, toilets are controlled by CC.
Lack of people in the town centre? this is a social paradigm shift; most people prefer to do their general shopping in a supermarket. its quick, cheap, easy and efficient? How will Helston compete with that?
There are so many unknown factors at play here.
And the last comment from Meerkats is interesting - yes, read these comment, but this is not a true representation of what people think. There's only about 5-6 different people commenting on here? Out of some 10 thousand inhabitants of Helston.
Although, I would say, the Helston Business Improvement Partnership (HBIP) is really starting to take shape. This was solely instigated by the TCM and two concerned business owners. Now there are some 130 businesses, out of a possible 300 odd in Helston, working together as a collective body to help improve the town centre. The hanging baskets and branding is a start...

I agree that most people may prefer to do their general shopping in a supermarket for obvious reasons, but the key to a successful Town shopping area is to attract those people into the Town in addition to their normal weekly shop at Asda etc
How Helston competes with the Supermarkets is also to make it easier, quicker and more efficient than the systems currently in place,to get people into Town. That's what is being discussed on this comment site

Personally I think you can develop as many groups/committees,bu
siness partnerships as you like, but unless you address the issues that the actual people that are going to spend their money in these shops would like to see addressed, then footfall will not increase. With reference to CC control, the responsibility for toilets is to be passed to town councils therefore future consideration to them needs to be planned for. One can advertise/promote with a logo and additionally make a town as pretty as one likes, but if there are no toilets, little free parking and an unreliable bus service then I doubt footfall will increase.
