Plan to modernise harbour at Coverack
11:00am Sunday 9th September 2012 in Cornwall
Plans to modernise the harbour at Coverack have been supported by its parish councillors.
Members were told of a plan to replace the existing davit on the pier with a modern electric swivel davit, with associated wiring.
The planning application was submitted by Commander William Frisken, director of Coverack Harbour Company Limited, who is also a parish councillor. He took no part in the vote, with councillor Tony Carey also leaving the room.
Beforehand they told members that the changes would be a continuing modernisation of the harbour to keep the fishing industry going. Cdr Frisken explained that the armoured cable would go behind the seating on the harbour and be concreted in place, adding that the harbour would not be damaged.
Discussing the application, the remaining councillors felt that the existing equipment was very old and in order to comply with health and safety rules the update was long overdue.
Councillor Roger Combe’s proposal to support the plan, as it needed to be done, was unanimously supported by members. Speaking after the meeting Mr Frisken said the existing manual davit was too small and hard to operate for single-handed fishermen, but an electric davit would make it a lot easier and safer.
