St Martin Show a 'resounding' success
4:00pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Cornwall
The standard of exhibits was as high as ever, with over 500 entries including vegetables, flowers, crafts, home produce, art and photography.
At 2.30pm the show chairman Brindley Hosken welcomed the early visitors and asked the show president, Robert DuCane, to say a few words. He then introduced Nigel Pascoe, head gardener at Flambards and Radio Cornwall gardening expert, who officially opened the show.
Mr Pascoe pointed out that it had been a difficult year for gardeners, both commercial and private, and commended exhibitors on the number and standard of entries, especially the vegetables, despite the challenging conditions.
By mid afternoon the general public had arrived in large numbers, braving the frequent downpours and muddy conditions. It was soon time for prize giving. Before asking Mr Pascoe to present the special prizes to the winners, chairman Mr Hosken thanked Johnny and Fran Alston for making their barn available for the society to hold its annual show for the fourth time.
He also thanked Mr Pascoe for opening the 2012 show and for presenting the prizes, before going on to say that the show took a lot of planning and organisation, thanking the many people involved in running it.
Mr Hosken also thanked the Cober Valley Band for providing two hours of entertainment. During the afternoon approximately £180 was raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
