Over a hundred young people took to the streets of Truro last week to play street sports as part of a new festival.

Organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, the Cornwall StreetGames Festival took place all day on Friday, August 10 on Lemon Quay in Truro.

The festival gave young people aged 12 to 16 years-old from across Cornwall a chance take part in a variety of sports including golf, dance, basketball, netball, football and table tennis.

StreetGames is a national charity that delivers sporting opportunities to young people from disadvantaged communities.

The Truro festival is one of many taking place up and down the country to coincide with the Olympics, and each based on the seven Olympic and Paralympic values. The festival was put on primarily for 12 to 16 year-olds from Malabar, Trelander and Malpas in Truro, Pengegon in Camborne and Treneere in Penzance but was also open to anyone else of the age group that wanted to take part.

Truro and Falmouth MP, Sarah Newton who attended the eventsaid: “What a fantastic day! I am so impressed with the activities being provided for young people; not just today at the Festival but ongoing throughout the year across Cornwall as part of the StreetGames programme.

“Beyond this programme, the Cornwall Sports Partnership is doing a first class job in providing opportunities for local people to find the right activity for them and to ultimately get more active and participate in an activity or sport regularly. In such an important year for sport and the even more important years to follow, their work in building a legacy from the Olympics is absolutely vital to the county and it is evident that they are well on track to achieving great things for Cornwall”.

The StreetGames Festival in Truro was the penultimate day of the weeklong Be Active Truro Festival which offered Cornish residents the opportunity to have a go at a variety of different activities and to find out how and where to get involved.
