Truro and Falmouth MP, Sarah Newton, is hosting an event to help people to reduce their fuel bills.

The free event, ‘How to Save Money Heating Your Home’, will take place between 11am and 3pm on Wednesday 15th August at Lemon Quay in Truro. This event will feature a wide range of exhibitors such as charities, social enterprises and companies including Centrica, Community Energy Plus, NHS Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, Volunteer Cornwall, Age UK Cornwall, Cornwall Rural Community Council and Disability Cornwall.

Each exhibitor will provide free information and advice on how people can reduce their energy bills this winter by installing insulation, switching energy supplier or taking advantage of benefits to which they may be entitled. There will also be a chance to sign up to the new Cornwall Together initiative which, once enough people have registered, will collectively negotiate with energy companies for lower bills across Cornwall.

Last year, Mrs Newton helped families to reduce their energy bills by producing a helpful guide entitled ‘How to Save Money on Your Heating Bills’ which was designed to help people to make their homes more energy efficient and make them aware of what support is available. By working with charities and public agencies such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Fal Energy Partnership, Mrs Newton and her office were able to distribute 5,000 guides to local people.

Mrs Newton’s office has produced an updated version of the free help guide which visitors will be able to take away with them and distribute to friends, family or neighbours who may need advice in preparing for this winter.

Commenting, Mrs Newton said: “Cornwall still has a serious problem with high levels of fuel poverty and this is why I want to build on the work we did last year. I would like to encourage as many people as possible to come down to Lemon Quay on 15th August and take advantage of all the free help, advice and support that will be available.”
