FORMER Helston College student Emily Cromey wowed audiences at the town’s Old Cattle Market on Friday.

Emily, whose musical career includes being a singer and baritone saxophone player for the very successful Helston School Jazz Orchestra during the late 1990’s, took to the stage with her uncle, David Ford and his band for the Sounds Eclectic Evening.

Singing along side Mr Ford's regular vocalist, Amber Demetrious, who is well known to London audiences, music teacher Emily delivered powerful renditions of the Elvis standard 'All shook up' and the Zombies 'She's not there' as well as singing on some of David Ford's own songs.

Music clearly runs in the family with Emily’s mother-in-law Hilary Cromey was Head of Music at Helston Community College for many years.

One spectator said the combination of two female vocalists was “a delight” and this was clearly demonstrated by the house crowd, who whooped in delight at the end of each number. Also appearing that evening, Terry and Denise Lawlor produced some well received recreations of old country songs.

These mixed well with the new songs of Falmouth student Toby Janes who had just returned from a three week mini tour of California.

The evening was brought to a close by an interesting amalgamation of two rock bands with members of Strangebrew joining Devils Creek on stage to produce some really powerful driving sounds.

This could only happen at Sounds Eclectic where bands inter mingle, share each other's ideas and play together. This was one night that the audience will remember for a long time.

Friday, June 15 sees Perranporth's The Beutons headlining with support from songsters Megan Marwick and Lily Somerville (guitar and banjo) and singer songwriter Matthew Collinge, with support from the residents. Entry is £5 on the door which opens at 7.30pm with all the proceeds going to ShelterBox.
