Solicitor warns legal aid cuts will affect thousands
10:30am Sunday 27th May 2012 in Cornwall
Ian Taylor, a family lawyer at Coodes Solicitors has warned about the damaging effects proposed legal aid cuts will have on thousands of Cornish families and recommends people seek advice now.
Mr Taylor said: “There are just under 12 months to go before the government, if the legislation is passed, will cut £290 million from legal aid budgets. This will mean that an estimated 600,000 cases which would currently receive legal aid in England and Wales will no longer be eligible for funding. If someone is having problems in a relationship or with child matters it may well be in their interests to seek advice now.
“Many of the cuts will affect families facing issues such as non-violent domestic disputes, marriage or cohabitation breakdown and child matters. My advice would be to act fast and act now.”
Aware of the impact that these changes will have on local people and their ability to afford the expert legal advice they need, Coodes have developed a range of fixed fee services for those who will not be eligible for legal aid in the future and those clients who fall outside the Legal Aid Scheme.
Mr Taylor added: “At Coodes, we have the largest team of specialist family lawyers in Cornwall, most of whom are The Law Society and or Resolution accredited in their field.
