No delays expected for Trafalgar Roundabout improvements

Cormac will begin survey works on Trafalgar Roundabout in Truro from Monday, May 28 in preparation for highway improvements due to take place later in the year.

The three-week programme will record the location and depth of communications ducts, water mains and gas pipes running beneath the central island. Main works to improve traffic flow at Trafalgar Roundabout are planned for the autumn.

“The service investigations are an important part of the preparation for works later in the year and will confirm the location of the various pipes and ducts that we will have to avoid or divert,” said Tim Wood, Cornwall Council’s Assistant Head of Transportation.

“We expect the main Trafalgar Roundabout works, which will take around six months to complete, to begin in September or October. The works will reduce the width of the central island to widen traffic lanes and improve traffic flow through the roundabout. With new 24 hour signal control we will introduce a new pedestrian crossing between the police station and the filling station on Tregolls Road to improve pedestrian access.”

Sam Ward from Cormac Solutions added; “We will be working on the existing roundabout island between the hours of 7am and 5.30pm and have planned for works to be completed within a three week slot.

“The works will not require lane closures or obstructive traffic management and are not expected to cause any restrictions or delays to journey times. There will be standard ‘advance roadworks’ warning signs placed on all approaches to the roundabout and traffic cones placed around the perimeter of the island.

“We are aware of the upcoming Britain in Bloom competition and have been in close liaison with Richard Budge of Truro City Council’s Parks Department to ensure that on completion of these works the island is reinstated to his satisfaction.”

Richard Budge, Parks Manager for Truro City Council, said; “We understand the works are necessary and are working with the Council and Cormac Solutions to achieve a result that satisfies all.

“With the South West in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions around the corner in July, we will be making sure the roundabout is restored and looking good once again after the works have been completed.”
