  • "This is an excellent initiative, and it could be enhanced by Cornwall Council copying a program which has been running for some years in Canada. Your old toilet is worth $50 when you replace it with a new 6L or dual-flush model! The City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver and District of West Vancouver have teamed up with the North Shore Recycling Program to deliver a toilet rebate replacement program that puts water conservation to work.

Essentially, the local authority is encouraging the use of more efficient systems,so less water is used when flushing the toilet"

Port becomes first 'Think Before You Flush Town'

PORTHLEVEN has become the world's first 'Think Before You Flush Town' after the campaign gained unanimous support at last week's town council meeting.

Run by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), an environmental group who work to keep beaches, waves and the ocean clean, the campaign is designed to raise awareness of the damaging effects sanitary waste and other sewage related debris can cause by being flushed down the toilet.

Cornwall Councillor Andrew Wallis, who has been working alongside the charity to kick off the Think Before You Flush initiative, said: “I was approached by SAS to see if I could help with their campaign. We went in to all the businesses in Porthleven which are open at the moment due to seasonality and everyone was really excited about it.

“We told them a bit about it and they were really interested, asking lots of questions. It was a great response.”

He added around 60 port businesses so far had agreed to support Think Before You Flush, with just two remaining to be contacted.

“No one said no. The support is phenomenal,” he said.

At Porthleven Town Council's meeting, councillors voted unanimously to pledge their support to the campaign after SAS gave a presentation which included a short talk from professional surfer Alan Stoke.

Mr Wallis said it was positive that Porthleven was the first town in the world to have adopted the campaign status and hoped more towns across the county would follow suit.

Business owners across the port who have signed up to the campaign will now receive flyers and stickers for their establishments, hopefully raising awareness of the problem to both locals and holiday makers alike.
