BT has confirmed that the visitor centre at the Goonhilly Satellite Station will stay closed all year.

The centre, which explored 200 years of communications history” had offered essential summer jobs to many young people from Helston and the Lizard over the years but shut its doors recently.

At one stage Goonhilly, once the worlds largest earth station, saw 80,000 visitors a year.

Jason Mann, a spokesman from BT said that while the centre would remain shut the site itself remained active.

“BT will not be reopening the visitors centre this year. Operational activities at Goonhilly such as the research and testing and sub-sea cable operations are continuing as normal.

“BT continues to be involved in negotiations on the future of some of the assets at Goonhilly.”

He added as hese negotiations were confidential he could not discuss the details.

A town councillor has called the news “disappointing” and that the visitors centre had been a draw for the wider area.

The site is famous for “Arthur” a massive grade two listed satellite dish, online since the early 1960’s.
