An expert in all things foody at Helston College has been honoured nationally for her outstanding teaching.
Head of food technology at the school, Pip Iles will travel to London as a guest of the trustees of the Design and Technology Association to receive the award for outstanding teacher of design and technology on March 19.
A school spokesman said: “Pip is the only lead practioner for Licence to Cook in Cornwall and has ensured that virtually all Cornish secondary and special schools receive training in food technology. “Pip’s success is due to her infectious enthusiasm and real love of teaching, together with her total commitment to food education.”
When the Let’s Get Cooking national network of cookery clubs came to Cornwall, she realised that many primary schools would not have access to the programme. By working with the healthy Schools Co-ordinator and the out of hours learning co-ordinator she managed to secure funds to set up Kernow Cook, which provides teachers with the skills, resources and cookery equipment needed to set up a cookery club, free of charge.
She has recently been appointed food project co-ordinator, spending one day a week working with schools in West Cornwall.
Her latest venture is to train food higher level teaching assistants in Cornwall and Devon.
