8:30am Thursday 29th October 2009 in Cornwall
A St Martin farm is one of 14 in the country, and the only farm in Cornwall, to host a training session on managing dairy cows around calving time.
The free half-day courses are being sponsored by Defra and organised by environmental consultancy firm ADAS.
Tregevis Farm, the home of Andrew and Julie Bray and their family, has been chosen as the venue for one of the courses, on Tuesday, November 24. There will be two sessions, between 10.15am and 12.30pm and 1.15pm to 3.30pm.
Both sessions will include managing the cow in late lactation, in the early dry period, pre-calving and finally in early lactation. They will each end with a discussion.
Tregevis has been chosen as a commercial dairy farm that gives the opportunity to see cows at different stages of lactation.
The meetings will be presented by Chris Savery, national nutritionist with The Dairy Group, and led by dairy cow veterinary surgeons Alastair Hayton, Mark Burnell or Rod Welford depending on the venue.
