Police in Helston have warned the town's children about the dangers of playing on building sites after some were spotted with protective suits contaminated with asbestos.

Officers in Helston were contacted today after reports a number of children seen on the site of St Michael’s C of E Primary School in Penberthy Road.

A police spokesman said that the children were seen removing protective suits from a skip which contractors had been using while clearing asbestos from buildings.

Police say that due to the hazardous nature of asbestos police are asking parents to speak to their children to check they have not been playing with the suits, unaware of the potential health implications.

Sgt Paul Marchant said: "We are not looking into this matter for any criminal offences, but we want to ensure the safety of the children. As the school holidays have begun it is also a good time to remind parents and children that building sites are not suitable areas for youngsters to play and pose a number of dangers."

The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Since the mid 1980s, the European Union and most developed countries have banned asbestos.
