To celebrate the launch of a new exhibition, Truro’s Royal Cornwall Museum is inviting visitors to take place in an afternoon of fun on Saturday.
The new ingenious contraptions exhibition is all about inventions from the past, and is here to prove that our forebears could be just as gadget-crazy as we are.
For example, the food processor, the very first was invented in 1910, and although the lack of electricity meant it was operated by hand, the basic idea of grinding things together was the same.
Another example is a flea catcher, dating from 1890. Made from wood and filled with honey, fleas would be attracted to it rather than the skin of their victim.
These are just two of the many inventions featured at the exhibition which also include a 1950’s sat-nav and a self-pouring teapot.
To open the exhibition the museum is welcoming visitors into their inventors lab, where they will be able to take part in a number of activities that include creating contraptions and junk modelling. Sculptor and storyteller David Kemp will be present to demonstrate his dilemic horn – a device credited with inspiring new inventions.
