THE body of 21-year-old man swept out to sea by strong currents at the weekend is believed to be that of Jonathan Boone from the Redruth area.
Mr Boone had been swimming with four friends off rocks opposite Godrevy Lighthouse on Tuesday afternoon when it is thought he was caught by a wave and pulled out to sea.
Despite the best efforts of his friends to rescue him Mr Boone disappeared and after an extensive combined search by rescue services his body was found at 1.20am on Wednesday morning.
Friends and family have paid tribute a “gentle giant” on social networking sites including Facebook.
The RNLI said there was a strong current running in the channel at the time of the incident with a choppy one to two foot swell running at the time.
Two of Mr Boone’s friends had jumped into the sea to try and save him but it was all in vain. Lifeguards who had been training nearby scoured the area on jet skis but were eventually stood down.
A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose was also employed as was a 12 strong cliff rescue team and the St Ive’s lifeboat.
The RNLI yesterday issued a general warning for swimmers following the incident at around 4.45pm on Tuesday.
He said: “The RNLI always advise anyone planning to swim, to visit a lifeguard-patrolled beach.
He added: “Bathers should swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags. These mark out the safest area to go into the water and are patrolled by RNLI lifeguards who will spot anyone in difficulty.”
