The Duke of York, Commodore in Chief Fleet Air Arm, will visit Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose on Monday July 13, the air station at which he as Prince Andrew, trained as a helicopter pilot in the early 11980s and from where he went to war in the Falklands.

The Duke will be at Culdrose as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation and to gain an insight into current operations in which Naval Air Squadrons around the world are involved.

During his visit the Duke will meet up with naval personnel.

As a young Prince Andrew, he trained as a helicopter pilot at RNAS Culdrose in 1981 before seeing action in the South Atlantic. When he arrived at the air station he was escorted by the then Lord Lt. of Cornwall, Lord Falmouth and soon settled down into life at the air station and getting to know the surroundings.

When he returned from the Falklands with his squadron it was also to Culdrose where he spoke to the Packet of his experience.

He went on to serve as a pilot on various Naval Air Squadrons until 1996 before taking up appointments in the Ministry of Defence, leaving the Royal Navy in 2001.
