A former Truro School pupil is leading an expedition to Mount Everest in a bid to host a charity cricket match at world-record altitude.

Gareth Wesley, who left the school in 1998, is leading the 50-person trip to a plateau at 17,000ft on the mountain to raise money for the Lord’s Taverners and the Himalayan Trust.

The plan is to play Twenty20 match near the base camp where England captain and vice-captain Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook have agreed to be honorary captains of the two teams.

The Lord’s Taverners help young people, especially those with special needs to have a sporting chance in life.

The Himalayan Trust helps provide basic infrastructure needs for the Sherpa people of the region in the form of education, health, forestry, monastery repairs and response to natural disasters.
