Truro hospital welcomes donation of books

A donation of books by Cornwall’s library service has received a warm welcome by the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

Patients and staff will have an additional 60 titles to choose from now, in addition to the 1,000 plus books that already make up the hospital library.

Lindsay Hartgroves, an outreach officer for reading development at Cornwall library service, came to the hospital to deliver the books.

She said: “We will also be supplying books to Redruth and Bodmin Hospitals. Today we have handed over 50 to 60 books, many of them are large print and we hope to be able to make another donation in six months.

“All the books are from stock the library service has finished with and we had the idea of donating them to hospitals and doing something positive for patients.”

Library volunteer Stan Gwynne has worked in the library for 13 years. He said: “This is excellent. Thank you very much.

“Most of our books are donated, we have never received money to buy any. Generally they come from patients or other donations.”

The hospital desperately needs large print books and the 30 plus given by the library service will be put to immediate use. The most popular books with patients are Cornish history and autobiographies.

The books are also put to good use when they come to the end of their useful life by being sold off in the Tower Block Coffee Shop to raise money for the Friends of the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
