A homeless man invited to stay at the Falmouth home of a Good Samaritan then hanged himself, an inquest heard this morning.
Steven Pengelly was found hanged in a garage belonging to Colin Jago, a member of St Mary's Catholic Church who allowed Mr Pengelly to stay with him in Budock Terrace on a number of occasions.
Tests carried out after his death, on July 15 last year, revealed that at the time he died Mr Pengelly had potentially fatal levels of amphetamine in his blood, although the cause of death was ruled to be hanging. Mr Pengelly's GP, Dr Ian Royston, said in a statement that his patient suffered from paranoid delusions, thought to be caused through smoking cannabis. He also injected amphetamine and was treated for depression.
The doctor added that Mr Pengelly got a job at Falmouth Docks, but was later sacked for making a false health claim.
Deputy coroner Andrew Cox recorded the verdict that Mr Pengelly killed himself.
