A teacher at Helston Community College has been dismissed for gross misconduct.

It is understood the teacher, who specialised in English and media studies, and was appointed in September 2003, had been suspended earlier this year.

Now, following a thorough investigation and a disciplinary hearing held at the school, he has been sacked.

Neither the college head Dr Patrick McGovern nor the governors would comment in detail on the matter this week, although an official statement from the county council said: "Following a proper and thorough investigation over a number of weeks, a teacher at Helston Community College has been dismissed by Governors due to gross misconduct. The matter will now be referred to the General Teaching Council."

No details about the "misconduct" have been given.

A spokeswoman for the teaching council said it was unlikely the matter would be before them for some time "as these issues take some time," she said. Ultimately the teacher could lose his licence to teach.

In the meantime, the teacher was given 15 working days in which to lodge an appeal.

A parent from the school told the Packet this week that she was shocked by the decision and felt it unfair and felt many others would feel the same.

The teacher concerned was "exceptional" and cared very much for the pupils he taught. "What a pity that such a good man is lost to this profession for good," she said.

"He was liked by colleagues, parents and pupils alike."
