Fish tales of the non-scaly variety were enjoyed by children at Helston Folk Museum when a story-telling session from a "19th century fish wife" was held.

As part of a series of Fishy Tales events taking place at museums and galleries across the county, youngsters in Helston were treated to colourful stories of Cornwall's fishing heritage.

A real life fisherman was also on hand to answer questions about the industry today and families were able to try their hand at net mending, rope knotting and dressing up.

Anita Pryor, learning development officer with the Royal Cornwall Museum who organised the session, believed such events were very important for understanding Cornwall's heritage.

She said: "Each year Cornish museums choose a common theme to celebrate its rich heritage. It's important to have a sense of the place we live in and the part it has played in forming the type of world we live in today.

"Fishy Tales is a chance to listen to stories based on real events. We have drawn together photographs, paintings, artefacts and archives to enable visitors to build their understanding."

The event at Helston Museum was attended by the mayor of Sasso Marconi, Helston's Italian twin town, and other guests who are visiting as part of the 40th anniversary of the twinning link.

Events are running throughout May in museums and galleries across west Cornwall. Other Fishy Tales events still to take place include the one at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance on May 24. Their art workshop is taking place on May 28, for children only.

The events are free and open to everyone but places are limited. Contact the museum for further details and to make a booking.
