More marine art at Falmouth gallery

Additional exhibits have reinforced the appeal of a forthcoming major maritime exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery, which has had to triple its normal insurance cover for the event.

Smell the Sea - Feel the Breeze, will run from March 1 to April 26 and is billed as an early celebration of Falmouth’s hosting of the start of this year’s Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from TMS Financial Solutions and Arts and Business South West, the gallery has been able to borrow a number of rare pieces and famous works from masters of the sea – with the extra insurance made necessary by the large number of high profile loans.

The earliest work set to feature is a (very inaccurate!) engraved map of Cornwall produced by Lucas J. Waghenaer in 1584, four years before the Spanish Armada.

This rare map appeared in the first publication of printed sea charts, which were previously hand-drawn. Another unusual exhibit is a rare view of Falmouth town taken from Admiralty Quay by Charles Napier Hemy RA.

It shows many of the buildings that were there before Falmouth was bombed during the Second World War. The stone quay can still be seen today.

Works on display will also include those of Henry Scott Tuke RA, Sir Terry Frost, William Ayerst Ingram, Jamie Medlin and Mike Haywood.

The loans, have been borrowed from the Royal Cornwall Museum, the Royal Society of Marine Artists through the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and a number of private collections.

The exhibition is being staged to celebrate and promote the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Race. From September 10 to 13, Falmouth will be the host port for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta.

This special Tall Ships Race is the centre-piece marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the port of Funchal in Madeira.

The exhibition celebrates all things to do with sailing and will include a painting by Leslie Arthur Wilcox (1904 – 1982) depicting the start of the Tall Ships Race on August 11, 1962, which has been loaned by the Royal Society of Marine Artists through the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.

A full programme of gallery events has been designed to complement the exhibition, which will include free workshops for babies, children, families, schools and community groups. A full colour brochure sponsored by TMS Financial Solutions will be available priced £4.50.

The exhibition runs from Mondays to Saturdays, 10 am to 5 pm, with free admission.
