Truro College hosted the second Cornish Skills Challenge in hairdressing, beauty therapy and complementary therapy. All local salons, spas and colleges from Cornwall were invited to take part and showcase the industry's talent here in the Southwest.

The competition was divided into themed categories and abilities and the winners were: Hairdressing: NVQ Level 1 First Timers' - 1st Nikita Pritchard; 2nd Katie Stephens; 3rd Harriet Blow. NVQ Level 2 Uptrend' - 1st Jenifer Franks; 2nd Anna Ingram; 3rd Michaela Hamilton. NVQ Level 2 Cover Girl' - 1st Ruth Savage; 2nd Georgia Harkon; 3rd Gemma Skinner. NVQ Level 2/3 Streetwise Man' - 1st Lisa Bray; 2nd Christina Barrett; Clarissa Jacobs. NVQ Level 3 or Stylist Avante Garde' - 1st Michelle Bauer; 2nd Gemma Matthews; 3rd Gillian Bray.

Beauty Therapy : NVQ Level 1 Nail It' - 1st Megan Petford; 2nd Lauren Mills; 3rd Laura Evans. NVQ Level 2 Club Scene' - 1st Vicky Grant; 2nd Laura Springall; 3rd Charlie Thomas. NVQ Level 3 Body Matters' - 1st Chloe Roberts; 2nd Paula Harling; 3rd Holly Benner.

Complementary Therapy: Aromatherapy - 1st Sam Bodley; 2nd and Very Highly Commended Candy Excell; 3rd Pam Swift. Reflexology - 1st Sarah Clay; 2nd Candy Excell; 3rd Natalie Wilson.

The competitors received a good luck message from award winning salon owner, Alan Edwards who attended last year's Challenge "I thoroughly enjoyed the competition last year and was amazed and the standard of work presented."

Industry experts travelled from as far as London to form the prestigious judging panel and commented that they found this competition both exciting and inspiring: Lyndy Caines, programme team leader at Truro College said: "We are absolutely thrilled at the uptake from local salons and spas to compete this year and with the impending World Skills 2011 being hosted in the UK, this was a good opportunity to participate in this fantastic event."

Streetwise Man: The Streetwise Man' category was won by Lisa Bray, pictured with her model Keith Emerick receiving her award from Director of Studies at Truro College, Cheryl Mewton Cover Girl: Ruth Savage, winner of the Cover Girl' category for stylists at NVQ Level 2 with her model and Director of Studies at Truro College, Cheryl Mewton Avante Garde 1st: Michelle Bauer winner of the Avante Garde' for NVQ Level 3 and Stylists with her model and Director of Studies at Truro College, Cheryl Mewton Avante Garde 2nd: Second place in the Avante Garde' category was awarded to Gemma Matthews shown alongside her model receiving her award from Director of Studies at Truro College, Cheryl Mewton Avante Garde 3rd: Gillian Bray was awarded third place in the Avante Garde' category.
