Prince Edward visits Truro College

Looking relaxed and smiling, Prince Edward dropped in on a series of workshops to promote the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in Truro this lunchtime.

Held at Truro College, the workshops were aimed at developing the scheme and encouraging more people to volunteer.

Wearing a brown pin-stripe suit, with a camel-coloured jacket to ward off the chilly Cornish air, the Earl of Wessex was greeted at the entrance to the Fal Building by college principal Jonathan Burnett and chairperson of the governors Ellen Winser.

From here he was shown into the main conference room, where he joined discussions in how to promote the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, for which he is a trustee.

David Pond, head of youth development at Cornwall county council, said: "Attractive and challenging volunteering can provide the sort of activity that young people look for. No matter what an individual's personal circumstances, a well planned and thought through volunteering opportunity can provide a vehicle for personal development as well as encourage young people to become active citizens who contribute to their local communities."

A private buffet was provided before the Earl returned to meet the remaining groups. A resume of the results of the discussions was then given by Philip Trevelen, director of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in the south west, and the Earl was invited to speak on the subject.

Organisations that attended the discussions included the police, Cornwall Hospice Care, St John Ambulance and the National Trust.

Following his visit to Truro College, the Earl was due to return to the Hall for Cornwall - where he attended a gala concert to celebrate the theatre's tenth anniversary last night - to meet staff and volunteers. Earlier today he visited the Bishop's Forum youth activity centre at Halvasso, where he saw youngsters enjoying a range of sporting and problem solving activities.

Yesterday he visited the Photography Centre and newly-refurbished Media Centre at University College Falmouth's Tremough Campus, to name the building in memory of the late St Ives artist Peter Lanyon.
