Falmouth's most central church could "fade away into extinction" if it fails to raise more than £1m for renovation.

Falmouth Methodist Church will undergo major renovation involving a £600,000 phase of work which will see improved wheelchair access and kitchen facilities amongst other changes.

Some of the funds will come from the Methodist Church itself, but members are also asking for the help of the wider community to contribute to their many fundraising events.

They are organising monthly lunches, quiz nights and shows to gather some of the essential funds.

Church member Jane Bennett said: "It's in the heart of Falmouth, it's such a community hub. It's a big building to look after and it's got to be more used to be viable."

She went on to say: "If we didn't do anything and just pottered on as we were, we would get to the stage where we would have to close our doors."

Reverend Andrew Mumford shares some of Jane's concerns about the future of the church.

He said: "It's about seeing what can this church be and what can it do for the 21st century. If we carry on doing what we have always done we will fade away to extinction.

"We don't believe that's the right way and we should be looking for what the church can be doing in the community for the people that we serve."

He spoke about some of the ways that the church is catering to the needs of the community, addressing problems with mental health, social isolation and poverty.

He said: "We are aiming at people within our community who are very much at the disadvantaged end of the spectrum.

"Falmouth is a lovely place, that's why we choose to live here, but within our community there are people who are on the poverty line."

The church offers various services to the "poorer end of our community" that "is hidden from view with all the holidaymakers" such as collecting for the local foodbank and offering counselling services.
