It is known for long hours and a pressured environment, but now people in the food and hospitality industry are to be given support on how to tackle mental health issues.

An event has been organised by Experts Grow, a programme that helps business owners to look after their own wellbeing, as well as the people they employ.

It takes place at Rodda’s Creamery in Scorrier on Tuesday, July 2 between 10am and 1pm.

Louise Brooks-Curry, Experts Grow’s learning and development manager, said: “Mental health is a real issue in the food industry. Sadly, more than 50 per cent of chefs suffer from depression, while at least one farmer a week dies from suicide.

“We are passionate about making the industry a better place to work, which is why we have created this free event to provide support for local businesses.”

Speakers from Cornwall Council’s Healthy Lives team will help employers identify sources of stress in the workplace, along with the ways in which this can impact employees’ mental health and their work patterns.

Thrive consultant Ali Scobbie will talk about The Thrive Programme, which trains people to take control of their lives, reduce mental health symptoms and reach their full potential through a range of practical tools and activities.

She will also show people how to spot signs of poor mental health in the workplace, along with the role of line managers and provide employers with tips on how to manage unhealthy thinking.

Mental health charity Valued Lives will outline the ways in which it can provide support to people with mental health issues in Cornwall, while Rodda’s – which won the 2018 Healthy Workplace Continued Excellence Award for supporting health and wellbeing - will also talk about how its approach has helped staff and the business overall.
